Bluebird Recreational Area (SRA)

The Sabine River Authority (SRA) selected SPI to provide engineering services for the rehabilitation and extension of the Bluebird Recreational Area in Orange, Texas. The project was partially funded by SRA and Orange County. The project also included rehabilitation and extension of the pier, a new kayak launch, and various improvements to the pavilion and picnic area. SPI coordinated with the environmental service provider for USACE permitting. Construction coordination was critical because the Bluebird Café is immediately adjacent to the parking area and the restaurant had to remain open and accessible. The scope of the project encompassed a range of improvements aimed at enhancing the recreational experience for visitors. Key elements of the project included the rehabilitation and extension of the existing pier, the addition of a new kayak launch to facilitate water-based activities, and various upgrades to the pavilion and picnic area to provide more comfortable and accessible spaces for gatherings and relaxation.

SPI’s responsibilities extended beyond engineering design and oversight. Recognizing the project’s potential environmental impact, SPI took a proactive role in coordinating with the environmental service provider to ensure compliance with USACE permitting requirements.

Furthermore, SPI played a crucial role in construction coordination. Given the Bluebird Café’s close proximity to the parking area and the need to maintain its accessibility and operation throughout the construction process, careful planning and communication were essential to minimize disruptions and ensure the restaurant could continue to serve its customers.

The successful completion of this project in July 2023 marked a significant milestone in enhancing the Bluebird Recreational Area’s facilities and amenities, providing visitors with an improved and expanded range of recreational opportunities while preserving the area’s natural beauty and environmental integrity.
